The results of the investigated sensory properties of the zinc oxide films (ZnO), obtained by the sol-gel technology, have been presented. It has been shown that the variation of the films resistance during the repeated thermal cycling is in the temperature range of 50 - 500 °C, under conditions of the different relative humidity it is (7.5 - 90%) when exposed to the nitrogen oxides (NO and NO).

The results of mathematical modeling of the light distribution in a gas optical sensor based on planar multimode waveguide (d >> λ) have been considered. In the proposed construction upon the waveguide small surface area a homogeneous substance layer of h~λ thickness is coated, the absorption spectrum of which changes in presence in the environment of the component to be defined. It has been shown that with an appropriate choice of geometrical and optical characteristics of the waveguide and of the layer the signal of the sensor in presence of the component to be defined can change for more than two orders, providing the sensor high sensitivity.
