The development and introduction into mass production of a line of universal magnetrons in the centimeter and millimeter wavelength ranges with a pulse power from several tens to several hundred kilowatts is one of the promising tasks in the field of development of electrovacuum microwave devices. In a similar class of magnetrons, cold cathodes initiate the start of generation at each pulse of the modulating voltage, and the generation mode is supported by a secondary emission cathode, which is simultaneously a cold cathode activator. In this work, using the Fowler – Nordheim method the electrophysical characteristics of the filamentous crystals (whiskers) formed on the surface of the cold cathodes at the maximum permissible high-voltage intervals were obtained. It was revealed that the current of field emission is formed due to whiskers. The performance conditions of high field emission currents necessary for generation mode in magnetron have been established.
